Sunflower Field at Dorthea Dix Park

As July comes to a halfway point, Dorothea Dix Park transforms into a breathtaking canvas of vibrant yellow. The iconic sunflower fields are in bright bloom.

We learned this display was originally part of a biodiesel initiative at the Neuse River Wastewater facility. The sunflower project moved to Dix Park in 2018 to offer public access to this amazing floral spectacle.

What started as an ecological experiment evolved into this beloved communal event. Now, the blooms are intentionally left to support pollinators and wildlife, enriching the urban ecosystem.

The field was full of buzzing bees and butterflies, all looking for the perfect flower.

We visited in the late evening for cooler temps and spent around 30 minutes walking around and through the fields. Here are some things you may want to know before visiting.

  • Follow the signs within Dorthea Dix park that say “Flower Field”. The actual field is across the street from the dog park.

  • Leashed pets are welcome at the field.

  • Restrooms are temporary facilities near the field.

  • There are walking mats laid out along the edges and the center of the field for smooth walking surfaces, but there could be mud if it’s raining or has just rained.
